Te Wharewaka o Pōneke Waka (Canoe) and Cultural Walking Tour package is an indigenous Māori cultural experience provides visitors to Wellington, with an authentic and unique opportunity to share in the rich culture and history of both Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) and Te Ātiawa/Taranaki Whānui (tribe).
This waka (canoe) and Māori cultural walking tour begins at the iconic building, Te Wharewaka o Pōneke (waka house). The building sits between Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s national museum, and its harbour frontage to the Te Aro Pā (settlement), home to one of the largest Māori communities in Wellington. Its modern architecture contains distinct Māori cultural aspects and housed inside are three traditionally carved working waka, as well as a café and conferencing facilities. The waka are launched from the floating pontoon into the safety of Whairepo lagoon. With perfect weather conditions and at the discretion of the kaihautū (captain), the waka can travel out into the harbour. Minimum of 10 guests, with the ability to cater for larger groups, offering traditional Māori kai (food), and conference facilities, makes this the perfect company event of the year!
