Description

Immediately feel welcomed and at ease with your personal guides Mervyn and Rangimarie, as you experience the warmth of true Māori cultural manākitanga (hospitality) by being picked up from your local accommodation or the visitor centres, to begin your haerenga (journey) and connection with their whānau (family).  A traditional Māori pōwhiri (welcoming ceremony) awaits your arrival into their whare (home), where you will be immersed in Māori culture and protocols that still practised today. Following the pōwhiri, the most important part is the sharing of food. This cements both parties connection as one. Once puku (stomachs) have been satisfied, you will experience Māori mythology stories, weaving, waiata (singing) and other traditional activities, plus the making of your own kai (lunch), the Hāngi, with a modern day twist. Whilst the food cooks,  you will be taken on a tour, visiting some of our favourite places around Whangarei, where you see the beauty and stories of Aotearoa through the hosts eyes.  Returning home to the smell and enticement that you can only get from a Hāngi, ready for your enjoyment. After fulfilling your mind, body and soul, the day concludes with a traditional whakawātea (farewell) before you are returned back to your pick-up point. This is an amazing 5 hour experience from pick up at 9am to drop off at 2pm, creating unforgettable memories and connections that will last a lifetime.
