Fred Harrison prolific Māori artist, with tribal affiliations: Aitanga-A-Mate Ngāti-Porou, Ngā-Puhi
Fred is the youngest son of the late Dr Pakaariki Harrison D.litt, QSO Tohunga Whakairo Master Carver. Creator of carved houses of the Māori people. His masterpieces include Whai Ora Marae, Tāne-Nui-a-Rangi, Ngā-Kete-Wānanga to name a few. He was one of the last great master carvers in Aotearoa, New Zealand. In my time with him, I was fortunate to learn the trade and participate in at least 5 carved houses and today I still maintain them. The people he would train and work with I would borrow lessons learnt from all of them, they had drive, motivation, artistic flair, knowledge and the skill to match. I’ve worked in whakairo all my life, and I am very proud of that.
I work across mediums although classically trained I transpose to other materials as crystal, steel, silver, sound, stone, I studied lost wax technique for 3 years to incorporate busts so lifelong dedication to artistic pursuits.
Whakapapa o te whānau Marama.
Ikaroa is the father of all the stars in the milky way, and the artist has captured his image on this Quartz crystal disc for Io.
