Aumangea, in Te Reo Māori means a person who is strong, brave, plucky, or tenacious. Does this describe you? Also named for the yarn used in this design, the Plucky Knitter, this pullover will be a (small) test of your character! Only the bravest and most resilient can knit this. But fear not, if you really want to give this project a go but are feeling hesitant, I have provided video and written tutorials a-plenty.

Also named for the yarn used in this design, the Plucky Knitter, this pullover will be a (small) test of your character! Only the bravest and most resilient can knit this. Difficulty Level: Intermediate – Advanced

Needle: US size 8 (5.0mm), 24 inches (60 cm) circular needle and (optional) size 8 DPNs (5.0mm) and US size 7 (4.5mm), 24 inches (60 cm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge.

Yarns Used: Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted (Worsted / 10 ply; 75% Merino, 20% Cashmere, 5% Nylon; 200 yards (180 meters) / 105 grams). Worked in two colorways, High Cotton (grey) as main color and Dirty Blonde (yellow) as contrast color.

For Substitutions: Use wool or a wool blend. You want a yarn that can under-go large amounts of stretch but still retain its original shape when taken off.

Yardage: These are approximations.

Small size
Main color: 550 yards / 500 meters
Contrast color: 350 yards / 320 meters

Medium size
Main color: 600 yards / 550 meters
Contrast color: 400 yards / 360 meters

Large size
Main color: 650 yards / 600 meters
Contrast color: 450 yards / 400 meters

X-Large size
Main color: 700 yards / 650 meters
Contrast color: 500 yards / 450 meters

Gauge:

  • 18 sts and 30 rows per 4 inches (10cm) flat in St. st. using larger needle
  • 22 sts and 28 rows per 4 inches (10cm) in the round in St. st. using smaller needle
  • 21 sts and 30 rows per 4 inches (10cm) in k1, p1 ribbing flat and in the round using smaller needle

Please note that both stitch and row gauge are important for this design. Make sure you are achieving both or you’ll need to make a lot of adjustments as you work the pattern.

Other Notions: Removable stitch markers, tapestry needle, scrap yarn, stitch holders.
