Experience real New Zealand Māori culture with a unique insight into a day in the life of a Māori elder. Kaumātua are the elders in Māori society, and are respected for their knowledge of tribal history and traditions. They are the keepers of the accumulated history of our people. Their guidance is often sought on all manner of topics in daily life as well as ceremonial matters of Māori tradition. Our guides are elders from our small coastal community of Waimārama where they all still live today.
This very special tour gives you unfettered access to the world of Māori rarely seen by outsiders. Our guides are knowledgeable and articulate and interesting story tellers. With humour and grace they will share their personal insights with you. On your way to Waimārama, our coastal village, you will visit the Celestial Compass and learn how our ancestors journeyed from one side of the earth to the other using ancient navigational tools. Once in Waimārama take a walk with your guides on the ancestral sacred lands of Hakikino where their people loved, fought and died over 700 years ago.
Visit the native plant nursery where today the family strive to restore, conserve and protect remnant bush areas and return the voice to the forest. Understand the unique challenges of combining all of this in a contemporary and viable land based business. Call in at their Marae reservation and then visit a family ancestral home built over one hundred years ago where you will share a meal together.
Our elders have an interesting and varied life and they enjoy meeting people and sharing stories. The tour is informal and relaxed and provides you with an insider’s perspective on being Māori as they relate historical and contemporary New Zealand Māori culture from a unique and personal point of view. This 6 hour tour includes a Māori kai (lunch). Transportation is provided at an additional cost.
